DTC brands are embracing membership models to improve retention

Digiday.png

After operating for seven months as a subscription business, MeUndies pivoted.

Instead of charging customers a recurring monthly credit they could use or waive, it decided to commit them to monthly underwear purchases at a discounted price, plus get additional benefits like limited-edition products and discounts on other MeUndies products. It’s a model that ties together those sweet recurring payments with customer loyalty. Customer retention implies that brands have more going for them than a snazzy marketing strategy. At MeUndies, members now account for 50 percent of overall business, and Shokrian said that these customers spend double the amount than non-members, on average.

Once-Online-Only Brands Will Open 850 Brick-And-Mortar Stores Over Next Five Years

Forbes.png

Back in 2015, at JLL Retail we put together our five-year strategic plan looking at current market trends and where we thought they would end up in, you guessed it, five years. Glossy.png

Warby Parker opened its 78th store last week — with a pre-IPO valuation in the billions and plans to have 100 retail locations by the end of 2018, the eyewear brand has helped change the retail narrative that thinking online-first is the only way to succeed in the age of Amazon.

Dozens of similar brands have followed this online-to-offline trajectory, continuing to invest heavily in physical retail — rather than open one or two locations, many are expanding their footprint across numerous U.S. cities. It’s a sharp contrast to the experience of legacy retailers, many of which are faced with store closures and declining revenue.
